David Gray will release his new album Gold In A Brass Age on March 8th. This will be his first album of new work in four years. Produced by Ben de Vries, son of producer and soundtrack composer Marius, Gold In A Brass Age finds Gray in renewed creative form and will arrive ahead of a seventeen date tour of UK and Ireland across March and April, 2019. The dates will include a sold-out London’s Royal Festival Hall before culminating with two nights at Dublin’s Bord Gais Theatre.
His eleventh record in a 26-year recording career, the challenge was to retain the same excitement for music while pushing himself into unfamiliar terrain. A song-writing shake-up with an element of mystery. The album’s title is taken from a line in the Kafka-esque short story Blackbird Pie by Raymond Carver.
About the album Gray says: “With this album, I was keen to get away from narrative. Instead of writing melodies, I looked for phrases with a natural cadence, so that the rhythm began with the words. I reimagined where a song might spring from and what form it could take.”
Produced by de Vries, work on the album begun back in 2016 and was written and recorded in several month-long spells between tours to promote 2016’s The Best Of David Gray, that included fifty dates in the States, and a co-headline tour with Alison Krauss. Despite de Vries and Gray not having met before, the seeds of the album’s sound were sewn early on in David’s home studio. Album tracks “Watching The Waves” and “Hall Of Mirrors” were the first to follow as de Vries and Gray developed the arrangements to songs that give the album its atmospheric and experimental undertones, in which tracks shapeshift, soaking in soulful grooves, electronica, blues and folk.
With a fully sold out UK tour Gray’s new album, Gold In A Brass Age, will be a monumental success.
