Dutch alt rock band Sprokkelhout highlights the Frisian Open Air Festival

Sprokkelhout

By Rick Slagter, Rock At Night Groningen Correspondent

Sprokkelhout is a remarkable representative of the alt rock and indie scene in Groningen. Their music is influenced by bands like Pixies, dEUS, Radiohead, they say, but you can also hear echo’s of The Cure and Pink Floyd. Characteristic of the Sprokkelhout-songs are the room for great guitar play and rather complex drum rhythms in combination with a steady bass and keys.

For the live shows, they add a healthy dose of enthusiasm and improvisation that works amazingly well. No show sounds the same.  At the end of June Sprokkelhout (which means ‘deadwood’) played at the Frisian Open Air Festival ‘Simmerdeis’ (which means ‘Summer Days) in Drachten, a town in the northern region of The Netherlands. The leadsinger/bassplayer had an knee operation a couple of days before the show, so he’s sitting on a chair on stage.
