The crowd watching Four Year Strong

For those of you yearning for the Vans Warped Tour to come to your town, there’s a great substitute—Rockstar Energy Drink Disrupt Festival.  The tour began on June 21st in Dallas, Texas and will continue across America until July 28th when it terminates in Albuquerque, NM.

On Wednesday, June 26th, the Disrupt Festival rolled into the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre in the middle of the afternoon, with temperatures looming in the mid-90s.  Yes, it was a hot one at the venue, and not a whole lot of shade available!

The afternoon concerts were held at the Festival Stage, which was in a field adjacent to the amphitheatre. Even though Wednesday is considered a “work day” by many, a crowd of 20-somethings gathered near the stage, some even wearing bathing suits, to see some of their favorite pop-punk, alt rock, and metalcore acts.

Vendor Area

A concession area was set-up near the amphitheatre with plenty of dark metal t-shirts, sun hats, and snack food available.  Since empty plastic water bottles were allowed, many were generously filling them up at water fountains ( a big plus for the festival).

Sleeping With Sirens

As I arrived, Four Years Strong was on the stage, trying to get the crowd going.  One of the highlights was Andy Black, with spiky hair, sporting eye liner, and a red bandana head band, putting on a bang-up show. Black played songs from Ghost of Ohio (a great album, I might add) and even threw in a superb cover of Billy Idol’s “Dancing By Myself”.  He never disappoints!

Memphis May Fire

Sleeping With Sirens really worked the stage, leaping up in the air, and attempting to get the crowd going. Lead singer Kellin Quinn said to the audience that the band was in West Palm Beach yesterday and received a much better reception, asking the audience to “form a circle” and show some life.  Honestly, I think it was just too hot outside so the dancing, moshing, and circling was kept to a minimum. With the heat index, it was likely over 100 degrees F.

Crowd surfing

By 6 p.m. the festival was moved under the big umbrella of the amphitheatre.  People could sit down in the shade or stand near the stage, getting close to the action.  Memphis May Fire really got the crowd going as people were head banging and fist pumping.  This Story So Far was well received, as the crowd swelled in numbers, many concertgoers arriving after their work day.

This Story So Far

By the middle of the evening, this girl was super sweaty and tired from the heat–and left the venue–although it would have been great to see The Used.  Overall, the festival was well-organized, the line-up was good, and the performances were top-notch—but the heat was draining.  I totally suggest checking out the Disrupt Festival in a town near you–but wear plenty of sun screen!
