By Mike McKenney, Rock At Night New England
Venue: Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Connecticut-September 7, 2019–Of Monsters and Men with Lower Dens
The Icelandic indie folk/pop band performed in support of their third studio album Fever Dream to an enthusiastic crowd at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Lead singer and guitarist, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, showcased her strong vocals, starting their set off with “Alligator”, a song that has gained traction via pre-release. Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson, (vocals, guitar) continued with “Empire”, a cut from the popular 2015 release ‘Beneath The Skin” album. Lead guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson and bassist Kristján Páll Kristjánsson, round out the talented band.
While the two lead vocalists harmonize well together, it is when their distinct sounds are showcased that their talent is most evident. Nanna flaunted her vocal control, mixing both her gravely lilt with softer intonations on standouts, “Wild Roses, “Wolves Without Teeth” and “Waiting For The Snow”. Then it was Raggi that blew everyone away with “Ahay” and the darker “Under The Dome”.
Opening for OMAM was Lower Dens, an Indie/Pop band from Baltimore. Lead by Jana Hunter on vocals, Lower Dens played a short, complimentary set to gear up the crowd for OMAM. “Galapagos, “To Die in L.A.” and “Buster Keaton” were most memorable.
As an added bonus of the, Of Monsters And Men “Fever Dream” tour, every ticket bought online will come with a CD of the new album.
