Single Review: Phil X and the Drills’ “Right On the Money” – Golden Robot Records- Release date June 10, 2020
Phil X has a reputation for being a stellar guitarist and in addition to his role as an integral member of Bon Jovi, since 2016, also boasts associations with Alice Cooper and Tommy Lee amongst others. Here he fronts his own band, the formidable Phil X and the Drills . The band already has a solid foundation and this stand-alone single consolidates their position as a quality outfit as they deliver five minutes of scorching high energy rock.
The song has an infectious riff, that reverberates through the first half of the track before giving way to a slower paced bass and drum segment. You know that a classic guitar solo is on its way and when it arrives it doesn’t disappoint as Mr X delivers a masterclass in fretboard wizardry.
The accompanying video is a lockdown tour de force with Phil amped up in an outdoor setting while Daniel Spree (bass) and Brent Fitz (drums) perform , with some vigour, from their separate studios . The song is interspersed with remote contributions from enthusiastic fans (and associated off-springs and pets) who alternate with band members lip synching the infectious hook line. It’s a formula that works to perfection.
“Right on the Money” is an explosive addition to the band’s growing catalogue and is start to finish quality. A blistering track that should be played at full volume.
