Colonial Oak Music Park-St. Augustine, Florida-July 10, 2021
Just across the way from the Castillo de San Marcos and tucked under the canopy of majestic oak trees in the heart of St. Augustine, is Colonial Oak Music Park. We have a beautifully diverse musical culture here in St. Augustine and the Latin Community was represented en force Saturday night with the happy sounds of Salsa, Merengue and Cumbia.
Belting out tunes and dancing on stage was the incredible Erika Weitz, the front woman for the Latin Fusion Band, Baba Caiman. Dancing the night away were children and grandparents, teens and Gen Xers, representing a melting pot of diversity across all ages and cultures. Ms. Weitz sang favorites from Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic to name a few, uniting us all in music and dance.
I was there to take images of this colorful band and found myself quickly lured in by the infectious sounds and atmosphere. Drawn to the center of the crowd I danced to the Bachata, Regaton and Salsa, singing along to familiar lyrics and sharing in the excitement of the evening.
The clock struck 10:00pm signaling an end to the show. Giving us one more song with Rock Star energy, the crowd erupted in a ball of energy. At the end, fans rushed the stage to gush at the band, strangers hugged each other and a group of visitors asked me if I could tell them where they could find more of the same because they didn’t want to stop dancing. Baba Caiman left us wanting more.
The Colonial Oak should consider installing a proper dance floor the next time they book this band. And my only request is this for Ms. Weitz, next time we cross paths, could you play “El Son de La Loma”? I can only imagine how incredible you would make that sound!
