New Album Review: “That’s A Fact Jack” by Practice House Records
Release Date: October 22, 2021
This band is so likeable and they offer up something for everyone! From rock and roll to Americana and roots music, honky tonk and blues, country, blues-country and alt-country and so much more, this award winning group of guys from Kentucky even have another band that has hived off of them, the rising Black Stone Cherry. Rock at Night has covered this band before and you can check out more background info in the last story HERE.
And what a history the band has! With a GRAMMY Award, CMA Album of the Year Award, two CMA Vocal Group of the Year Awards, two Top 10 charting albums, and four consecutive Top 40 hits, their international success spans multiple genres and has covered decades. They have been a band since 1968. The Kentucky Headhunters continue to tour throughout North America and just recently did shows in Europe for the first time. The band has the ability to reinvent themselves as they build their fan base globally, proving that even though age is creeping up, they refuse to be limited or slow down.
The studio recording “That’s A Fact Jack” just dropped and it has 14 tracks with a nice mix of genres and styles and a great sound! About the title track: “Jon Lawhon did a great job,” says Richard Young, speaking for the band, “He used a kaleidoscope effect, with swirling designs of the band and our album artwork to create a vibe of nervous tension yet at the same time, a feeling of childlike imagery, to mold the heaviness of the music and the song’s lyrical content.”
The title track is an epic anthem about the troubles of today, “Let’s All Get Together and Fight” was a slow tempo and humorous country song about family fights during the holidays, “Cheap Tequila” was a country-rock song comparing tequila to perfume, “Cheap Effie” almost sounded like ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, rocky with incredible guitar solos! “Heart and Soul” is a honky-tonk and blues song, fast tempo, great guitar. Loved the lyrics about love gone wrong! “Lonely Too Long,” great vocals for a country-rock song about looking for love. “We Belong Together,” a classic mid-tempo country-rock song about love–great guitar work. Another love song was “Cup of Tea.” A personal favorite! “Susannah” is a song about searching for love, it sounded like a southern rock/country-rock song to me. “Watercolors in the Rain” was a contemplative and straight up rock song with a comparison to rain being tears and washing tough times away. “Gonna Be Alright” is another rocker. “How Could I” is a break up song, great keys and guitar and the title track were the two songs already released.
About “That’s A Fact Jack” Rock at Night says: “These are all great songs that will fire up the southern rock, country aficionados and music lovers everywhere. Pure talent! Each song takes on a different vibe and this band knows how to tell a story with their skillfully written lyrics for each one. Their musicianship and songwriting is unequaled. Love the whole idea that everyone can love them and the songs they sing. This is a great album! More, please!“
