JAMMIN’ WITH JAMIE
EP REVIEW: SONGS OF LOVE by ISLAND OF LOVE
From: London
Genre: Garage Rock
Label: Third Man Records
Release date: March 18th, 2022 (digital)
July 1st, 2022 (vinyl)
Originally called Love Island, Island of Love is the first band signed to Jack White’s label Third Man Records (London). Jack White’s London location opened last September that serves as a retail store and performance venue. He also has other locations in Nashville and in my beloved hometown Detroit, Michigan. (DETROIT ROCK CITY BABY)!!!
“Songs of Love was a collage of pretty wacky riffs Karim would play as guitar warm-ups until writing with the full band,“ the band says. “Dealing with feelings of inadequacy, the lyrics shine a light on a way most of us felt before picking up an instrument, and the voice it’s since been able to give us. To have Third Man show an interest has been a surreal privilege to say the least.” – via Third Man Records Website
MY REVIEW
My fellow lovers of fuzz rock rejoice!!! Finally, a good EP that contains all the fuzzy goodness of a true garage rock sound- yet clear enough to hear the lyrics. I listened to this EP while spring cleaning and I must say it is upbeat and motivating. My room no longer looks like a tornado just stormed through and I am ready for warmer weather! When organizing my room, I found old clothing from my tumblr/indie phase in fashion. Ironically, this band reminds me of a lot of that time period and the bands during that era (such as The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys). My favorite track off of SONGS OF LOVE is “At Home”.
