Wide Awake Festival – May 27th-28th, 2022-Brockwell Park, London
With the summer festival season fast approaching in the UK, and still very little sight of much resembling summer, Londoners are being treated to the return of Wide Awake Festival to Brockwell Park near Brixton. It’s two days of live music at the end of May, ahead of the Queen’s Jubilee weekend, and there’s no camping involved. You can’t beat a festival where you can get a bus home to sleep in your own bed, or maybe someone else’s, at the end of the night. It’s a festival for independent music with names such as promoters Bad Vibrations, LNZRT and SC&P, and the folks from popular venues Moth Club and Shacklewell Arms behind it, so you know it is going to be an eclectic mix of some of the best new and established bands around.
Kicking off on the Friday afternoon (27 May) for an evening of primarily electronica, techno and DJs including headliners Bicep along with Caribou, Optimo and Working Mens Club, and four stages curated by south London’s venerable Corsica Studios.
Saturday starts at noon, for those who didn’t party all the previous night, and is a day for fans of more guitar based music in a punk and post punk vein with the likes of local south London lads Fat White Family, Pist Idiots, great Aussie noise makers Tropical Fuck Storm and Amyl & The Sniffers, and the equally riotous Surfbort from the US. Other standout names on the bill include Floating Points, The Horrors, Billy Nomates, Kevin Morby and Dream Wife. The main attraction has to be headliners Primal Scream, who will be performing the whole of their iconic Screamadelica album for the first time in over a decade.
Check out the whole line up on the festival’s website www.wideawakelondon.co.uk with still more surprises in store. You can also buy tickets there at £84 (plus fees) for the whole weekend. Day tickets start at £35.
If you’re in London, come south of the river and support independent music, which has suffered heavily during the last two years of lockdowns and venue closures. And as Slade used to sing “Cum on feel the noise”.
