Review: Bring Prudence – Album-Dreamboat-Release date: April 7, 2023
It has been a while since Oleh Zaychenko moved from his native Ukraine to Chicago, and some six years or so since he came up with his ‘Red Horses’ album in 2016 under the moniker Bring Prudence.
Now, Zaychenko who resides in Brooklyn is coming up with his new effort, ‘Dreamboat,’ still under the Big Prudence moniker. Well, he may be ‘prudent’ in some respects, but he is all out here with a wide-eyed combination between chamber pop and folk rock, and he seems to have quite an adept touch with both.
There are quite a few ques Zaychenko picks up here, from the brilliant sixties chamber pop of Left Banke and Duncan Browne, to modern composer Yan Tiersen and modern folk greats like Gillian Welch.
Whether Zaychenko picked up on these influences consciously or unconsciously makes no difference, as he has assimilated them into his music quite seamlessly, actually making those sounds quite his own, and letting the 11 songs here flow freely one hand, and present his intricate, orderly arrangements on the other, as if Big Prudence is floating (or flying) in the dreamboat he mentions in the album title.
