Review: Vectralux – The Subtle Extravaganza – Released April 22, 2023
Very often, the themes power pop band cover relate to the love themes, concentrating on the musical elements with some great melodies, harmonies and guitars.
Often it is the exceptions, like Guided by Voices or Pavement, that veer into other territories, both musically and lyrically that stand out.
Atlanta’s quartet Vectralux seem to take the latter road, already shown on ‘Each Morning And The Morning Thereafter,’ their previous effort from 2021 that they are willing to take some other roads, particularly lyrics-wise, and now they confirm it with their latest 5-song EP ‘The Subtle Extravaganza.’
Musically, all the good influence choices are there again – from classic seventies power pop to eighties new wave an nineties alternative with left-field pop tendencies.
Lyrically, they take it a notch further with a more layered contexts to boot. Talking about the EP, producer/bassist/singer Andy Tegethoff said
“We all have contrasts and contradictions that pile up in our lives. Plusses and minuses, details and generalities. There’s a sine wave of highs and lows but when you look back, eventually we perceive those ups and downs more as a line than a wave. A blur of good days and bad days–many days both at once. We may remember peaks and troughs, but on the whole it’s a plainsong pageant. Just your typical tornado. A stationary journey. It’s a Subtle Extravaganza.”
All in all, an excellent effort and a band to watch out for.
