Review: Saurian’s singles “Ice Cream Man” and “Gobstopper” – September 29, 2023

Saurian is a New Zealand quartet, but all the fans of that Flying Nun sound bands like The Chills and The Clean might not expect what these guys sound like. On the other hand, if they, or any other listeners favor their sound on the heavier, quite heavier side, Saurian might be their ice cream flavor here. That means that they should not expect Saurian to cool them down, but to heat them up. And, as they themselves point out, they are an ”octopedal rock unit,” as “it takes 8 feet to kick this much ass.”
While “Ice Cream Man” is full force on stuff, “Gobstopper,” seems to be on a bit of a mellower side, but take that ‘seems’ description with a pinch of salt, as the guys put more stress on the melody here, without losing any ounce in energy and intensity, letting the vocals and guitars do their thing, the way Foo Fighters do.
