If you like Blues music, you’ll love this band. Barely a year old, Two Bugs & A Roach (affectionately called ‘The Bugs’) have been gathering Blues fans at various Adelaide venues. I discovered them at a house party Saturday night and found them on Sunday at the Franklin Hotel. They played three engaging sets of foot-stomping, hip swinging Blues. Their influences are Chicago, West Coast & Texas Blues. They mix up their instruments, swapping guitar types for various songs.
Rubes (vocals & guitar) has a great, gravely Blues voice and plucks a mean guitar, both bass & lead. Mannix (bass & vocals), is a key member. He is versatile, also playing lead guitar, & drums on occasion. Mick, on drums, is a highly sought-after musician and works with several Adelaide bands. Nathan adds the final Blues touch with his measured playing on the harmonica.
The band plays a mixture of traditional Blues covers and some impressive original material. Their version of ‘Walk Right in, Walk Right out’ reminded me a little of Pokey LaFarge. They plan to record a 10 track CD in the near future, so keep an eye out for these guys.
