Review: Cosmo Jimmy – Under That Dress – Release date: November 11, 2023
Feel like some unabashed power pop that moves anywhere between XTC and The Smithereens? Well, then you don’t have to look much further than Cosmo Jimmy and their latest album ‘Under That Dress.”
Cosmo Jimmy are a New Jersey quartet of Poontang Twang, Cosmo J., David Kossoff and Nigel Partridge. The album was actually recorded way back in 1987, produced by Tommy Marolda (The TOMS, Richie Sambora, Smithereens), and when these guys recorded their song “Batteries Not Included” for a movie soundtrack for a movie that actually never got released.
So what is the real charm here? Yes, the music has all the staples of high-quality power pop, but by the sound of it, you simply cannot guess when it was really recorded – it could have been 1979, 1987, or yesterday. Simply, it has that fresh and new quality even after all these years, and that is always the best sign that it deserves attention.
