Review: Elephant Stone – Back Into the Dream-Release date: February 23, 2024

How would you define modern psychedelic rock? Well, instead of using big words, you can try listening to modern purveyors of the genre, from the Australians Tame Impala to well, Montreal’s Elephant Stone, who exemplify all the best elements of the genre on their latest album ‘Back Into the Dream.’

And this quartet actually do take us into their (and our) dream throughout the ten tracks here which do have a connecting dream theme throughout with the band frontman Rishi Dir and his three bandmates exemplifying their vast knowledge of all psychedelia past, which they seem to have digested them so well, adding all the modern touches that make their sound quite individual. After all, for the past 15 years Dir has collaborated with the likes of Beck and Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others, something that has obviously enriched their sound so well exemplified on this album.

It is also important to add that since their debut in 2009, this psych-pop creation of Rishi Dhir along with bandmates Miles Dupire (drums) and Robbie MacArthur (guitar), and Jason Kent (keys/guitar), has released five critically-acclaimed LPs and two EPs, toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, been nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and picked up praise from the likes of NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound, Rolling Stone, Clash Magazine and more.
