Music Review: Bad Bad Hats – Bad Bad Hats -Release date: April 12, 2024
Those who love children’s books might have guessed where this Minneapolis duo picked their name – Bad Bad Hats are named after a little-known song from “Madeline,” a beloved children’s book series about a mischievous young girl and her yellow-clad classmates.
Yet, is this a children’s album then? Well, only in the sense of good, clean fun that any good pop rock should be.
That is exactly the direction in which songwriter Kerry Alexander (guitar/vocals) and Chris Hoge (guitar/bass) are going here, with sparkling, clean melodies dual vocals and arrangements that complement the songs in the best manner.
As with the band’s name, the duo started out with an interesting concept, when back in 2020 they collected prompts from their active Patreon fanbase, writing one-off songs based on the requests.
And as everybody has their their take on music, those requests varied widely, so Alexander and Hoge assimilated as many genres there (and on the album) but with quite an unifying personal take on them.
So if good clean fun is the concept (and it certainly should be) Bad Bad Hats nailed it here, turning bad hats into some quite good looking/sounding ones.
