Review: Gramercy Arms – The Making Of The Making Of-Release date: April 26, 2024
DIY is never an easy thing for bands and artists that try to operate within more than one genre or sub-genre. On one hand, they have have to cross musical borders carefully and make their music sound seamless and easy-flowing at the same time.
On the other hand, they have to reach an audience that itself is not strictly tied to any specific genre, and that the key thing such an audience is looking for is – music that sounds good to their ears.
One such band is NYC’s musical collective Gramercy Arms, that through its four albums so far had as a key goal to come up with melodies that are the best they can get, and than add elements from various (pop and rock) genres that suit them.
That seems to be (again) its key guiding light on their latest album ‘The Making Of The Of,’ an album chock-full of great melodies that drift anywhere from some great power pop, dream pop, shoegaze and anywhere else their fancy takes them.
Again it is a loose combination of artists and members of different bands where the two guiding forces are Dave Derby (The Dambuilders, Lloyd Cole) and producer Ray Ketchem (Guided by Voices, Luna, Elk City).
The duo not only has a great touch of selecting the right participants for this project (this time around it includes a long-winding list of collaborators from bands like Guided by Voices, Luna and Gigolo Aunts, to Lloyd Cole himself, among others), but making them fit into their project almost to perfection.
The result is eight songs of some great, melodic pop rock that crosses genre lines with an incredible ease.
