Review: Laughing’s album Because It’s True – Release date: June 28, 2024

Laughing

You can combine the name of this Montreal band and the title of its debut album like this: We’re Laughing Because It’s True that power pop is not only still around, but is growing stronger.

This sprightly, jangly quartet (Cole Woods (he/him), Josh Salter (he/him), André Charles Thériault (he/him), Laura Jeffery (she/her) seem to have picked up their power pop references from all the right places – Big Star, latter day The Replacements, Teenage Fanclub and touches of Pavement and Sarah Records  here and there and have combined it all in an almost perfect summer concoction, ice-cold lemonade and all.

It is quite hard to pick a winner among the 11 guitar-ringing gems here (no losers to be found), as it seems that Laughing have molded all their influences in the best manner possible with some quite ‘serious’ smiles on their faces.

Yes, it is true that this is one of the more accomplished power pop debuts in recent years, and that Laughing are a band to watch.
