Review: Young Scum – Lighter Blue Album Review – Release date: September 8, 2024
They seem to love their jangle pop in Richmond Virginia, or, at least, the quartet that goes under the name of Young Scum (a nice pick up and a twist from LCD Soundsystem song) coming from there does.
That is what their second album ‘Lighter Blue’ tells us, an album that took the band (Chris Smith (he/him), Ali Mislowsky (she/her), Ben Medcalf (he/him), Nate Rubin (he/him)) some six years to come up with.
Some might think that it is a bit of a long time to create an album of light (like in blue), breezy and airy jangle pop. Of course, there is nothing easy there, particularly if you are aiming for perfection. Then you have to take into consideration any personal elements, changes in lineup, life in general, if you will.
And it seems Young Scum certainly are aiming for that great set of melodies, hooks and performance that could get close to perfection as close as it is possible. They do take quite a few cues from the artists that already took that route, but they seem to have digested their influences (they seem to have a full set of those cult Sarah Records releases, and quote power pop greats Velvet Crush in one song title here) so well, and have produced their, quite current take on them. And it all works, oh so well!
