Review: Heaven’s album Dream Aloud – Release date: April 4, 2025
Those following musical trends a bit more closely at least can guess what power-popgaze should signify – a combination between power pop and shoegaze, as the term combination would indicate.
But, if you are wondering what that would sound like, then you don’t have to go any further than ‘Dream Aloud,’ (an apt title if there is one), the new album by New York trio Heaven.
And yes, Matt Sumrow, Mikey Jones who created the band and newly added bassist Sonia Manalili, were able to create quite a balance between the melody-driven power pop and guitar buzz of shoegaze on quite a few tracks here, particularly the opener ‘I’ll Let You In,’ but don’t stop at repeating the same sound structure moving to more gentler pastures with ‘Sun Setting Skies’ or a classic power pop sound of the closer ‘A Painted Image.’
Throughout, they show that being a trio doesn’t mean that you have to work with a restricted sonic palette, giving their power-popgaze a true substance.
