Venue: The Vinoy, St. Petersburg, Florida–Warped Tour 2016–BIG REEL FISH
Rock At Night had the pleasure of speaking with Aaron Barrett (vocals, guitar) and Matt Appleton (saxophone) of the ska band REEL BIG FISH during their stop with the Warped Tour in St. Petersburg, Florida. The guys describe their music as a “ska band influenced by other stuff”. They are unabashedly proud of being labeled as a “ska band”, saying “it’s fun like roller blading.” The band was started by high school friends in 1991 and has been going strong, touring year round, ever since! When asked how many Warped Tours they have participated in, they noted “maybe 7 or 8”. They really enjoy the Warped tour and get to “hang out with friends like Less Than Jake and Ballyhoo!”
During the interview, Aaron Barrett and Matt Appleton discussed the band’s evolution, the Warped Tour, their upcoming holiday ska vinyl album Happy Skalidays, charities they favor, and advice for bands starting out in music business.
Members: Aaron Barrett – Vocals, Guitar Billy Kottage – Trombone John Christianson (Johnny Christmas) – Trumpet Ed Smokey Beach – Drums Derek Gibbs – Bass Matt Appleton – Saxophone, Vocal Harmonies; Genre: Ska/Rock; Home Town: Orange County, California
